The Choices of Raoul de Chagny [Aug. 9th, 2013|11:53 pm]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.

So by request... here is a link to my first-draft, first-chapter "Love Never Dies" fanfic, The Choices of Raoul de Chagny. If it's possible to have an angst/fluff crossover, then this is probably it... or it might just be the result of getting Igenlode to write fluff :-D

But for the first chapters we are stuck with the totally messed-up LND Raoul and Christine, trapped together in mid-Atlantic on board the liner Persephone out of Cherbourg, and the only way things are likely to change is to get even worse.

(I've got the whole thing completed in manuscript form up to the Epilogue, which has yet to be added: so I do know where this is going!)

Christine's earnings [Jul. 12th, 2013|09:49 pm]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.

Listening to the disembarkation scene again recently, I noticed for the first time a discrepancy between what the pressmen claim about Christine's public appearances ("Your first concert in years") and about Raoul's income ("My wife is an artist!"/"Her art is paying off your gambling debts")

I remembered this as portraying Christine as the breadwinner, but in fact, if she hasn't been singing, she hasn't been earning!

If Christine hasn't sung professionally in years, isn't the implication that Raoul has only just taken up gambling (requiring his wife to return to the stage?) Or, I suppose, that he has only just run out of money...

"Love Never Dies" is opera by any other name [Jan. 23rd, 2013|02:20 am]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.

(Reposted from my own journal)

Finally managed to 'win' an eBay auction for a 99p copy of "Love Never Dies" (plus postage of course), after failing to win three because someone else bid more than I was prepared to pay or topped my bid by 10p in the last second. Fortunately there are a large number of copies of this CD set being sold off and another one was generally along in a few days...

I hold by my verdict from the freebie highlights: this is actually an extremely good (and hummable) score, very recognisably Lloyd-Webber and yet not Lloyd-Webber parodying himself or mining past hits -- it's new material and it's excellent. Summary of good and bad pointsCollapse )
But what Lloyd-Webber has done with "Love Never Dies" is essentially to write a modern opera; he is writing tunes after the manner of Verdi (whose songs could be whistled in the street) with the lush orchestration of Puccini. It's certainly not musical comedy; it's not even a 'musical' any more, sung through almost entirely with themed orchestration and with vocal lines extending to the trained limits of the human voice. There is one heavy rock number which sticks out rather (although it is reprised minus the pounding accompaniment to considerable effect in the final scene), but more or less all the songs are worth hearing in context, and some of them -- like the beautiful but sinister waltz which is far more the theme tune of the story than the title number -- are really good.

CD or DVD? [Oct. 15th, 2012|07:56 pm]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.

I was given a 'freebie' cover CD with a few tracks from "Love Never Dies" on it and really liked the music, if not the plot (see my journal), so I was thinking about trying to pick up a cheap copy on eBay.

Normally I'd go for a CD as they're cheaper and more convenient (you can listen to them while doing other things - videos of musicals get watched maybe once or twice, but soundtracks get played), but in this case I gather that the CD is the recording of the show before the improvements and the DVD is the recording of the 'finalised' version, so there may be significant musical differences between the two.

I found this video on YouTube today, was blown away and have been spreading this like wildfire! This lady is so much like Anna it's insane! It would be nice to see more operatic Christines and I think she would be incredible!

Love Never Dies on You Tube [Mar. 23rd, 2012|02:46 pm]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.

Just in case you haven't already discovered this yourself:

at least, while they stay up on YouTube. Last night there was a full, continuous 2+ hour version that had gone up on the 11th that is now gone.

I hope they do allow the clips; it's great publicity. I'm much more interested in seeing this if it tours the U.S. now than I was just from hearing the OLC.

LND Mood Theme [Apr. 27th, 2010|09:42 pm]
Love Never Dies. The 2010 Musical.
Hello fellow Phantom fans! I've just finished making an LJ mood theme for Love Never Dies and thought it would be fun to share it with you all. I'm afraid some of the images for certain moods might not fit perfectly, as there seem to be a limited number of photos of the musical available, but I did my best to try and match them as closely as possible. This was made (somewhat obsessively) over the last few days as I watched the show last week and have fallen in love with the entire Phantom story all over again.

I hope you like it!

LOVE NEVER DIES Ramin Karimloo Rushed To Hospital
Source: Broadway World

Love Never Dies' Ramin Karimloo has been in hospital for surgery after being taken ill.

It was initially thought that he had a flu-like virus, causing him to miss shows over the weekend, but the actor posted this morning on Facebook:

"It's not flu as first was suspected. Blood tests showed a problem and I was rushed for Key Hole surgery last night. Did not see that coming at all. All is and will be fine and I'm determined to be back asap."
